Description

Where reality ends, the dream begins.

Inspired by M. C. Escher’s *Dream (Mantis Religiosa)* (April 1935), this art-inspired tee brings an extraordinary vision to everyday wear. A bishop lies in a marble sarcophagus beneath vaulted architectural structures, while an enormous praying mantis rests upon his chest. Familiar elements become strangely unsettling as the arches, isolated buildings, and star-filled darkness open onto a seemingly endless void.

Escher brought together three elements drawn from real observations: the vaulted architecture of a small church in southern Italy, the tomb of a bishop he encountered in Rome, and a praying mantis he had studied in Sicily. Through the intricate technique of wood engraving, he transformed these separate subjects into a scene that feels suspended between the tangible world and an impossible dream.

The power of this work lies in its quiet tension. The mantis appears both still and watchful, its unexpected presence challenging the solemnity of the sleeping bishop. The architecture offers a convincing sense of depth, yet the ground beneath it seems to end abruptly, leaving the entire scene adrift in darkness. Escher invites us to wonder: is the bishop dreaming of the mantis, or is the entire scene a dream?

Balancing meticulous craftsmanship with surreal imagination, this classic tee brings a remarkable piece of graphic art into contemporary everyday style. Designed for those drawn to mysterious imagery, intricate detail, and the fine line between reality and imagination.
