Nature meets mathematics in *Butterflies*, a wood engraving created by M. C. Escher in June 1950. Across a dark field, butterflies with individually patterned wings gradually change in scale and form, becoming smaller and more abstract as they move toward the upper part of the composition. What begins as a collection of recognizable natural forms evolves into a carefully ordered study of repetition, transformation, and the relationship between positive and negative space.

Escher’s fascination with the boundaries between representation and abstraction is at the heart of this work. Each butterfly belongs to the same visual rhythm, yet no two are quite alike. The composition invites a closer look at how intricate details can give way to geometric simplicity without losing their connection to the whole.
